Morning hip spin-up / shoulder spin-up
Starrett created the hip spin-up as an alternative to the sun salutation, stripping it of spiritual elements to make it more 'athletic.' It involves fundamental hip positions with some isometric pauses, integrating spine movement. The shoulder spin-up is simple arm swings through full arcs—overhead, behind, rotation—to keep shoulder capsule mobility. He emphasizes that if a busy person does nothing else, doing one of these three 'spin-ups' (hip, shoulder, or breath) before leaving the house ensures they've touched key ranges and reconnected with their body.
Touching joint end ranges signals the brain to maintain those maps, preventing pruning of movement options. Isometric holds improve local muscle control and provide proprioceptive input.
I would like you to do the hip spin-up, the shoulder spin up, or a breath spin up before you leave the house.
