Daily Movement for Lymphatic Flow
Huberman stresses that daily movement is paramount for lymphatic health because the lymphatic system, unlike the circulatory system, has no pump. Its fluid (lymph) is moved by the contraction of muscles. He recommends aiming for at least 7,000 steps daily, noting that more movement, like taking stairs or walking extensively, is beneficial. He explains that a lack of movement leads to sluggishness and the buildup of waste products in lymphatic fluid, which can cause local and systemic inflammation. This protocol is a fundamental way to ensure continuous lymphatic drainage, preventing issues like lymphedema and general bodily discomfort. He also mentions that activities like vacuuming or cleaning contribute positively.
Muscle contractions, even low-level ones from walking or micro-movements, compress lymphatic vessels, pushing lymph fluid unidirectionally towards the heart. This is crucial as lymphatic vessels are one-way and fight gravity.
Huberman notes that as he's gotten older (50 now), he moves less spontaneously and thus consciously incorporates more exercise. He also observes that if he doesn't get enough steps, his body feels sluggish.
Movement, movement, movement is the way you're going to encourage lymphatic flow.
