Optimizing Sex Frequency for Conception
When couples are trying to conceive, the timing and frequency of intercourse are crucial. The goal is to ensure a healthy supply of sperm is available in the female reproductive tract when the egg is released. Sperm can survive for approximately two days within the female body. Therefore, having sex every other day during the fertile window (the days leading up to and including ovulation) is recommended. This strategy balances the need for consistent sperm presence with maintaining optimal sperm count and quality. While daily sex might seem intuitive, very frequent ejaculation can decrease the volume and number of sperm per ejaculate. Conversely, prolonged abstinence (e.g., a week or two) can lead to a higher proportion of older, potentially less motile or morphologically normal sperm. For men who have abstained for an extended period, a 'cleanse' ejaculation shortly before the fertile window might be beneficial to ensure a fresh supply of sperm. The use of ovulation predictor kits can help precisely identify the fertile window.
So usually we say that sperm can live inside the female genital tract for about 2 days. So if woman is going to ovulate like on day 15, I tell couples have sex 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18. So we do every other day.
