36-Hour Collagen Fasting Protocol
DeLauer designed this protocol as a reaction to fad 'sugar diets' and his dissatisfaction with bone broth fasts. He wants to combine the benefits of fasting (mental clarity, gut rest) with the restorative properties of collagen and glycine. He believes that by eliminating all other food, the collagen peptides are more efficiently directed toward connective tissue and gut repair. He emphasizes that glycine's antioxidant and calming effects counter the stress response of fasting, and that working out is essential to still trigger autophagy. He also suggests sauna. He used Bubs collagen for its purity and grass-fed sourcing. The protocol is meant to be simple and inexpensive.
Collagen peptides contain high glycine, proline, hydroxyproline. Glycine is an antioxidant and inhibitory neurotransmitter, reducing reactive oxygen species and calming the nervous system. It also has cytoprotective effects in the liver. Proline and glycine are substrates for gut mucosal repair. Additionally, collagen peptides may act as signals for connective tissue protein synthesis, especially when other competing amino acids are absent. Exercise induces autophagy via caloric deficit and mechanical stress, compensating for the blunting effect of protein intake.
He performed this once for 36 hours and reported sustained joint comfort, gut calmness, mental calm, and good sleep. He plans to repeat and gather more data.
I had 10 grams of collagen before going into my workout ... post-workout ... I had another 10 grams of collagen. ... Then at lunchtime I had bone broth. ... dinner time ... I added five grams of collagen alongside my bone broth. And then right before bed, I had three grams of pure glycine.
