Betaine HCl before meals
Berg explains that stomach acid should be extremely acidic (pH 1-3, like battery acid). As people age, acid production declines, leading to a host of digestive issues. The typical symptom of low acid is paradoxically acid reflux, because the valve at the top of the stomach doesn't close without sufficient acid. Antacids make this worse by further reducing acid. Betaine HCl tablets, taken before meals, can quickly relieve bloating and improve protein digestion. He recommends starting with 3-5 tablets and seeing if bloating clears within days; if it works, continue for weeks until symptoms resolve, then try reducing the dose. He notes that apple cider vinegar can help but doesn't actually build hydrochloric acid. The underlying cause of low acid may be a deficiency in potassium, sodium, or chlorides, which are needed to produce HCl.
Hydrochloric acid in the stomach is essential for denaturing proteins, activating pepsin, sterilizing food, and absorbing minerals and B12. Low acid leads to incomplete digestion, allowing undigested food to ferment downstream and causing the lower esophageal sphincter to remain open, resulting in reflux. Betaine HCl directly supplies acid, lowering gastric pH and restoring these functions.
I've recommended it in practice for many, many years. ... it works like magic.
You would take three or four or five of these before a meal. They're little tablets. And oh my gosh, it starts to build up the stomach acid and it relieves the bloating and it helps you digest, especially protein.
