Daily raw cacao powder drink (no boiling water)
Dr. Berg frames this drink as a simple, cumulative intervention that can re-teach arteries to produce more nitric oxide. He cites a study showing vasodilation comparable to moderate exercise and another showing a reversal of arterial thickness equivalent to two to three decades of aging in just 14 days. The cacao stimulates the body’s own enzyme system for nitric oxide synthesis, in contrast to beetroot powder, which directly supplies nitric oxide. He personally varies the temperature and additives but always avoids boiling water and typically separates it from his coffee to preserve vasodilatory effects. The protocol is designed to be easily integrated into a morning routine, with the potential for both immediate and progressive benefits to heart, brain, and skin.
Cacao flavonols trigger endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), the enzyme that produces nitric oxide from L-arginine. Nitric oxide relaxes smooth muscle in arterial walls, causing vasodilation and lowering blood pressure. Over time, this repeated activation may upregulate eNOS expression and improve endothelial function, reducing stiffness and plaque formation. The separation from caffeine avoids the adenylyl cyclase and phosphodiesterase pathways that favor vasoconstriction, allowing the full vasodilatory signal.
Dr. Berg says, “I actually put a little scoop of beetroot juice powder with it. … And sometimes I will warm up the water a little bit, but I will not bring it to a full boil. … But sometimes I'll have it cold.” He also sometimes adds magnesium glycinate and a pinch of sea salt.
Cacao powder is a potent trigger of this enzyme machine that helps you make more nitric oxide, which again is a vaso dilator.
