Steam Inhalation with Salt
Berg presents this as an alternative or addition to the neti pot, especially for those with lung mucus who may find it easier to breathe salt-infused steam. The towel tent directs the vapor toward the face. Notably, he mentions that ion particles from the salty water will get into the sinuses and start breaking down mucus. He acknowledges there are more expensive devices like a salt diffuser (halo generator) but dismisses them as unnecessary, making this method a cost-effective choice.
Fine particles of salt in the steam interact with mucus in the respiratory tract, thinning it and exerting antimicrobial effects similar to the saline rinse, albeit in a more diffuse form. The warm humidity also helps soothe inflamed tissues and loosen thick secretions.
Just get a pot of water, OK ... dissolve some salt ... let the steam come up to your sinuses with a towel over your head and just breathe the steam.
