Morning outdoor light exposure within 60 minutes of waking
Berg states that poor sleep is one of the most potent disruptors of health, capable of severely affecting blood sugar and mood. He notes that night shift work is classified as a probable carcinogen because of how deeply sleep affects whole-body genetics. Morning light exposure is the foundational circadian anchor. The sun's infrared rays penetrate clothing and tissue to stimulate melatonin production, which supports sleep and mitochondrial health. He emphasizes that even on overcast days, the outdoor light signal is far stronger than indoor lighting and is necessary to lock the circadian rhythm.
Dawn light contains high proportion of blue light that signals the suprachiasmatic nucleus via melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells, suppressing melatonin and entraining the circadian rhythm. Infrared light penetrates deeply and stimulates cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria, increasing cellular energy production and possibly local melatonin synthesis. Proper circadian entrainment regulates cortisol, insulin sensitivity, and mood-related neurotransmitters.
Out of all the things that can really mess up your health, it's poor sleep. Because if your sleep is not right, it can severely affect your blood sugar. It can severely affect your mood.
