Technique of planned pauses
Święcicki explains that he has a simple 'patent': he lets his co-commentator know in advance, and then during the match he quietly counts the seconds. He believes that giving the audience a break is essential, and that German commentary’s extreme minimalism (up to two-minute silences) is also too much; he prefers an emotionally engaged style, so this is a middle ground.
He uses this method himself and finds it an objective way to confirm he isn't smothering the viewer.
I use a simple trick. And it's very easy to verify that I take 15-20 second pauses. My co-commentator knows about it and it's something that repeats in a match, for example five times in the first half, 10 in the second half, and you just wait and count when nothing interesting is happening, and then you have proof that you gave them a rest.
