Pre-show caffeine protocol: zero caffeine except triple espresso 1 hour before concert
Marcin explains that his rider explicitly states no caffeine throughout the entire tour except this one pre-show dose. He compares it to the host's experience with multiple espressos before sports matches—the crash is real. The feeling after the show is a massive emotional and physical comedown: the high of performance, the audience's love, then the solitary hotel room. The caffeine withdrawal amplifies this. He still uses the protocol because the performance benefit is worth the crash. He notes that this is separate from the alcohol that is always present backstage; he never drinks before playing.
Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, increasing alertness and reducing perceived fatigue. By staying caffeine-naive the rest of the tour, sensitivity is maximized, so the triple espresso produces a pronounced stimulant effect precisely when needed.
Marcin: 'I drink that triple espresso and suddenly something opens up in me, that I am this hyper-focused and ready for action.' He initially crashed hard: 'I would return to the hotel and I just felt suddenly that I was sinking into a mega low, I was simply sad.'
Until recently I had it written in my rider that I don't drink anything with caffeine on the entire tour. Zero, zero coffee, zero any cola or whatever. But before the concert, for example an hour before the concert, I get a triple espresso.
