High-Protein Ketogenic Diet for Weight Loss
The speaker advocates for a high-protein ketogenic diet as the most effective approach for weight loss, emphasizing that calories still matter, contrary to some popular beliefs. He recommends a protein intake of 20-30% of total calories, which for an active individual like himself (220 lbs) could mean up to 220 grams per day, significantly higher than the RDA. This high protein intake is crucial for satiety and muscle preservation, especially as one ages. Carbohydrate intake should be kept between 50-100 grams per day, but critically, at least one-third of these carbs must come from fiber (e.g., broccoli, avocado, cucumber, asparagus), avoiding highly glycemic options like carrots or bell peppers. The speaker stresses the importance of tracking total calories and macronutrients, as it's easy to overeat calorically dense foods like macadamia nuts or heavy cream on a ketogenic diet. He believes that creating a 10-20% energy deficit through this diet formulation is the primary lever for weight loss, while the ketogenic aspect provides benefits like increased satiety, reduced appetite, and improved metabolic flexibility.
High protein increases GLP-1, improves insulin sensitivity, and enhances fatty acid oxidation. The diet fundamentally shifts the brain's fuel source from glucose to ketones, which can decrease appetite. Caloric deficit is the primary driver of weight loss.
I learned the lesson that protein was really important. I was thinking ketones would be basically save you know muscle and but they don't they have an anti-catabolic effect that we can talk about but there's nothing you know if your protein goes from like 250 grams a day to like you know 70 to 80 grams a day you're going to lose a lot of muscle and the ketones have just don't tell the USDA that or you know the the RDA they still want you to believe that 08 grams per kilogram uh is all you need.
So I would say calories are super important. So just uh gravitate towards a high protein ketogenic diet. And if it's just purely weight loss, I would say high protein, moderate fat, and then high fiber.
