Morning cardio and double-session contest prep
Piechowiak described that after the 5 AM cardio and breakfast, he took his son to preschool, then drove to the gym. The workouts were designed to be brutal: heavy weight, drop sets, supersets, everything to absolute muscle failure, leaving him soaked and utterly depleted. By the time he got home at 1 PM, he was non-functional. The caloric deficit made recovery impossible. He said that anyone who has prepared for a contest understands this state of near-collapse, and that it’s not sustainable outside of a short contest window.
The combination of severe caloric restriction, prolonged moderate-intensity cardio, and high-volume resistance training depletes glycogen, elevates cortisol, and reduces anabolic hormones, leading to extreme lethargy, mental fog, and irritability.
He recalled being so exhausted that his wife had to hand him the remote because walking two steps felt impossible. He said, “Będę się gorzej czuł, wiesz?” (‘I’d feel even worse if I moved.’) This left him feeling like a useless wreck, highlighting the mental toll.
I would return home at 1:00 PM. I was totally wrecked. And you know, on a caloric deficit. So imagine how I felt, right? Well, you simply came home and felt like a wreck, useless to anyone.
