Screen partners via natural scent
King’s team asked women to compare different sexual partners and rate predictors of orgasm. Smell had the largest effect size, surpassing muscularity, height, or conventional good looks. This aligns with a large body of research on olfactory cues in mate choice across species. The finding suggests that women’s orgasms are not purely about technique or emotional connection but about deep biological matching. He interprets this as evidence that the orgasm is an evolved mechanism to detect genetic quality, and that ignoring smell in modern dating misses a critical channel of information.
Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes produce unique body odours that, when dissimilar, signal complementary immune systems. Orgasm may act as an unconscious assay of this compatibility, reinforcing pair choices that produce healthier offspring.
The biggest one we found was attractive partner smell… none of these are huge effect sizes but… it was the largest effect size and that's interesting because it suggests that the the biggest predictor is something to do with genetic compatibility.
