Cod liver oil for inflammation and infections
In the 1926 United States Dispensatory, cod liver oil was a standard medical remedy to inhibit tuberculosis and treat rheumatoid arthritis. It was also used with calcium salts for tetany (muscle twitching) and for nerve pain. Dr. Berg connects this historical use to modern knowledge: cod liver oil is rich in omega-3s, particularly EPA, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory. He implies that this forgotten remedy was scientifically sound and remains useful today for these conditions. No dosage is mentioned; the emphasis is on its historical credibility and modern mechanistic backing.
Cod liver oil contains high levels of EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid that exerts a natural anti-inflammatory effect, which would explain its usefulness in rheumatoid arthritis and nerve pain.
They used cod liver oil to inhibit TB. So if you had a tuberculosis infection, one of the things they would use is cod liver oil. Cod liver oil was also used for rheumatoid arthritis. And now we know why. Because of the high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA, which is a natural anti-inflammatory.
