Holotropic Breathwork Session
Borys learned that the body holds trauma, and breathwork can dislodge it. He notes that three people in his group compared the experience to DMT, the strongest psychedelic, suggesting the body can produce such states on its own. As a sitter, he saw participants scream, cry, and physically release, and he felt like a cornerman in a fight, rooting for them. He describes having to press hard on a woman’s upper back until the muscle softened and she smiled, a direct physical release. He also mentions that the technique echoes what David Hawkins wrote about releasing emotions.
Hyperventilation alters CO₂ levels and can induce states comparable to DMT by activating endogenous mechanisms. The body may store unresolved emotions; the breathwork can bring them to the surface for release, often manifesting as physical tension that can be helped by pressure from the sitter.
He felt his hands explode, received the message ‘everything is in your hands,’ and cried from happiness. As a sitter, he was deeply moved by the courage of ordinary people confronting their demons.
My holotropic breathwork ended simply with me crying from happiness … because I realized that I live the way I wanted to live and everything is okay.
