Gentle Reversal (Gentle Touch)
Mike presents gentle reversal as one of two solutions to the momentum mistake. He describes it as 'you still reverse dynamically. We're not asking you to pause, but way more gently.' This preserves the 'vibe' of the movement and is still athletic. The mechanism is reducing peak forces that cause connective tissue strain. He notes that studies show no extra growth from rapid reversals vs. controlled ones, so the only trade-off is a small increase in safety with full pauses. For many, gentle reversal is a practical middle ground that can be sustained long-term without making training boring.
By avoiding a sudden stop and reversal, peak tissue deformation rates and joint forces are dramatically reduced. This lowers micro-injury accumulation in tendons and ligaments. Active muscle tension remains high, so growth signaling is maintained.
He says in some of their videos with athletes, they call it 'gentle touch' and have used it with success.
