The World as a Mirror
Opening segment, discussing his book. The external world, including circumstances, relationships, and finances, is a direct reflection of our subconscious inner state, serving as a 'mirror' to accelerate spiritual development by showing us who we truly are.
Why this matters: Nacht operationalizes this abstract spiritual concept with a concrete example: a sudden street encounter reveals your automatic, subconscious reaction, which then teaches you about your true nature.
This builds on the hermetic principle 'as within, so without,' but Nacht grounds it in everyday psychology. He argues we live in our subconscious, and external events are projections that force self-knowledge. The material world is a 'higher school of life' where we learn through extreme situations unavailable in the non-physical realm.
Nacht explains that we descended from a non-physical realm specifically to learn through material challenges. The world is 'real on this wavelength' but we must not become slaves to matter. He criticizes two extremes: those who are only 'spiritual' and neglect material reality, and those who are purely materialistic with 'square Lego heads.' The correct path is to be in the right place at the right time, using matter for development. The mirror functions automatically: you act subconsciously, then observe your action and learn who you are. He uses the example of being mugged—your instantaneous reaction reveals your true state, not the calculated, polite response you might construct after deliberation.
Nacht describes a hypothetical mugging scenario where his Israeli army training might cause him to instinctively harm an attacker. He would act first from his inner voice, then possibly regret it later. This reveals his true nature in that moment, which is the purpose of the mirror.
Remember that the creation of which we are particles serves us, among other things, as a mirror, because everything is contained in everything, therefore it can also be a mirror. Little mirror, show me who I am in this world.
