Hydration and sodium loading before dry fasting
DeLauer emphasizes that going into a dry fast already dehydrated is like 'torture ourselves'—the goal isn't to suffer unnecessarily. By loading sodium and water beforehand, you give your body a reservoir to draw from while metabolic water production ramps up. He acknowledges that during fasting, insulin is low and the body excretes more water anyway, so sodium helps retain that pre-loaded water. He recommends Element because it provides a precise 1,000 mg of sodium per serving, making it easier to dose. He states that during a regular water fast, he's a fan of electrolytes, but for a dry fast, the logic is to hydrate prior. This protocol is a harm-reduction strategy rather than a performance enhancer.
Sodium increases extracellular fluid volume by osmotic attraction, temporarily expanding blood volume and interstitial fluid. During the subsequent dry fast, this extra fluid is available for renal conservation and cellular metabolism, delaying hypovolemia and electrolyte imbalances. Additionally, saturated sodium levels support nerve function when fluid is later restricted.
If you were to ever dry fast, I would definitely recommend you hydrate and sodium load before so you have a little bit more water on hand.
