Sugar Fast for FGF-21 Elevation
DeLauer presents this protocol as a nuanced, short-term intervention for those already in good metabolic shape. He draws on rodent studies where pure sucrose diets caused greater weight loss than other diets, attributed to FGF-21. However, he stresses that the diet is not easy—it requires eliminating almost all fat and relying heavily on sucrose, which for many would mean processed candy or pure sugar sources. He notes that dietary fat stores easily, while sugar must undergo extensive conversion to become body fat, but sugar's insulin spike can block lipolysis. By keeping calories low and spacing meals, the insulin effect is mitigated, allowing fat burning. Protein is backloaded to minimize catabolism, as insulin from sugar is anti-catabolic only if sugar is consumed frequently. He cites Mark Bell, a fitness personality, who has eaten candy and juice for breakfast without negative health markers, attributing his success to his underlying metabolic health. DeLauer is cautious, repeatedly stating he is not endorsing the diet for everyone and that he himself has not tried it, but might experiment with 1–2 days per week.
FGF-21 is a hormone released in response to sugar intake, particularly sucrose. In metabolically healthy individuals, it binds to receptors in tissues, promoting mitochondrial uncoupling—where energy from nutrients is dissipated as heat rather than stored—thereby increasing total energy expenditure. This thermogenic effect can create a negative energy balance, leading to fat loss. Additionally, the very low fat intake prevents dietary fat from being stored, while the high sugar intake, through insulin release, exerts an anti-catabolic effect on muscle, preserving lean mass when protein is strategically timed. The caloric deficit ensures that overall energy intake is less than expenditure, amplifying fat oxidation.
Thomas DeLauer has not personally tried the diet but says, 'it's something that I might try for like one or two days out of the week for a little while just to kind of see what it does because I'm all about experimenting.' He also shares Mark Bell's anecdote: 'This is my breakfast. I had some sour patch kids, Starburst, jelly beans, 8 ounces of apple juice. And he hasn't seen much of a negative change in his markers, but he's also healthy.'
This sugar type fasting or FGF-21 approach could work really, really well if you are already fit, already athletic, and already lean.
