Start with laughably small exercise goals
Johnson described his first workout with Jelly Roll: a 5-minute walk and a few 10-second bursts of what they called 'running' — a term used very loosely. This approach acknowledged Jelly's 350-400 lb frame and zero fitness base. They focused on establishing a habit without triggering failure. Over months, they progressed until Jelly could run one mile continuously, a massive achievement for someone at his starting weight. Johnson emphasizes that you can't compare these beginnings to anyone else's; you have to meet yourself where you are. The mental shift of accepting extremely small starts is what prevents dropout. He also noted that Jelly used the phrase 'we use the term running very loosely around here,' which Johnson now quotes as a mantra for beginners.
Johnson himself started running in Walmart shoes, a hoodie, and sweatpants, with no knowledge of proper footwear or nutrition, progressing from 8-mile loops while listening to audiobooks to ultra distances over months. He lived the same principle of starting small.
My first workout... was like a five minute walk and like 10 seconds of like and we use the term run very loosely.
