Two HIIT sessions per week with recovery days
Stanfield notes that many patients dive into daily high-intensity exercise, believing more is better. Historically, coach Bill Bowerman's 'hard days followed by easy days' was revolutionary; later science confirmed that adaptation happens between efforts. Stanfield personally settled on two HIIT sessions per week as a balance that maximizes benefit without compromising recovery. The rest of his week includes other exercise modalities, echoing the principle of mixing intensities.
Resistance training and intense intervals cause micro-damage to muscles. During rest, repair processes rebuild them stronger. Without sufficient recovery, the body cannot fully adapt, leading to plateau or injury.
I aim for about two high-intensity interval training workouts a week, and the rest of the week is dedicated to other types of exercise.
Exercise stresses our bodies and it gets stronger in response. … Exercise without sufficient rest will undermine our gains.
