Sims acknowledges the reality of the ‘5 a.m. club’ — people who wake up and train before work or other responsibilities. Forcing a large breakfast right after waking can cause GI upset, but training fasted can compromise session quality and prolong the post-exercise catabolic state even further. The tiny pre-training snack, exemplified by the viral protein coffee trend or a simple banana with yogurt, supplies readily available carbohydrate to blunt excessive cortisol release and some protein to start the amino acid supply. Sims does not prescribe a macro split or precise timing beyond ‘before you go training,’ emphasizing practicality and individual tolerance.
