Write down every idea immediately
Mike describes this as a non-negotiable habit. He keeps his phone with him at all times, even in bed. When an idea feels brilliant as he's drifting off, he forces himself to wake enough to type it out. He acknowledges the sleep disruption but argues the long-term value of captured ideas far outweighs the cost. He notes that people often ask how he has so many ideas; his answer is that he doesn't have more ideas than others, he just writes them all down and the ones that work, work really well. This practice is the front end of his creativity cycle—the generation phase that feeds the later pruning phase.
Mike says some of the best things he's ever produced came from ideas he wrote down in this way. He'll reluctantly turn over his phone, tell himself 'this is good enough to disrupt my sleep cycle,' and jot it down. About half the time, his brain cascades into more ideas, and he captures those too. He's been doing this for years.
Never ever ever if you can help it without turning neurotic let your ideas go. If you have a good idea don't forget it. Write it down.
