10-Day Detox Diet (Elimination-Addition Diet)
Hyman created this adaptation of the elimination diet after seeing that many chronic conditions respond to dietary change. He calls it more an 'addition diet' because it adds nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods. The diet is detailed in his online program (tenddetox.com). The speed is remarkable: people with type 2 diabetes have come off insulin in three days. The diet simultaneously modulates gene expression, hormone regulation, and inflammatory pathways. Bland’s early 1991 study on a similar protocol showed a 60% symptom reduction and improvements in gut permeability and liver detoxification, giving historical validation. Hyman says if he could use only one therapeutic tool, it would be this diet.
By removing immune-activating food antigens (gluten, dairy, etc.) and reducing gut permeability, the diet lowers the load on the immune system. The addition of high-fiber, phytonutrient-rich plants feeds beneficial gut bacteria and provides polyphenols that directly train the innate immune system and upregulate antioxidant and detox pathways. This rapidly calms systemic inflammation, allowing the body’s own healing systems to resolve symptoms.
Hyman has conducted this program with thousands of participants both online and in live workshops. He describes seeing large drops in symptom scores within days. One memorable case was a man with severe rheumatoid arthritis that resolved after the detox.
