Savory Breakfast
The concept of a 'sweet breakfast' (like cereal, muffins, or pancakes) is largely an invention of the food industry. Historically, and in many cultures, breakfasts were savory. A savory breakfast should be built around protein (e.g., eggs, salmon, turkey, yogurt, protein powder), include healthy fats, and ideally some fiber. While small amounts of starch can be included for taste, they should not be the main component. Crucially, avoid anything sweet except whole fruit, and even then, consume fruit at the end of the meal. This approach helps stabilize blood sugar, leading to sustained energy, reduced cravings, and improved mental clarity throughout the day. Mark Hyman highlights that a protein-rich breakfast is vital for muscle protein synthesis, especially as one ages, and can improve overall metabolic health.
I used to have a Nutella crepe for breakfast every morning growing up Mark and by 10:30 I was starving I mean Nutella crepe yeah that that'll do it but I'm recovered now I'm recovered and if I really want a Nutella crepe what I do is I have it after lunch or dinner as a dessert and I have some vinegar before.
The curve yeah of course the curve of your breakfast really determines how you're going to feel for the rest of the day and whether you're going to feel in control and connected to your body or whether walking by that Bakery is going to give you an irresistible urge to buy all the cookies like it used to be for me.
