Eat Real Certification for Schools
Eat Real's approach involves a comprehensive assessment of a school's food program using 10 rigorous, science-based standards. These standards cover aspects like sugar levels, protein quality, local and sustainable sourcing, variety, and fresh food options. After the assessment, schools receive a score and a detailed 'food action plan' to guide their improvements. Eat Real then provides ongoing support, including access to experts like dietitians and doctors, and facilitates networking among food service directors across the country. This community aspect allows for sharing of suppliers, recipes, and operational strategies, such as kitchen setups and staff training. The goal is not just initial change but continuous improvement, with schools working towards different certification levels (green, silver, gold). This structured support system helps overcome barriers and demonstrates that real food is achievable within school budgets and operational constraints.
The program provides a clear playbook, registered dietitians, nutritionists, doctors, and connections to local suppliers. It fosters a community among food service directors (the 'Eat Realies') for sharing best practices and resources, making the transition feasible and sustainable.
what we do is we actually come in and we assess the school food program with our 10 science based standards that are super rigorous. We just went through a review. It includes some of the best doctors, the best research, And we looked at everything from how much sugar is in the food, what quality proteins, how local, how sustainable, how much a variety, how many fresh food choices and options there are for students, and we assess them.
